Gas industry – warning systems for the installation of gas networks

Similarly to power, telecommunication and water supply networks, gas pipelines must be properly protected. The vast majority of gas networks are routed underground. In the event of unwanted human interference, the embankment of the area has suffered a landslide, it is necessary to use safety devices that will alert unauthorized persons that a gas network is in place in that area.

To protect underground gas pipelines, warning systems are used, which include, among others, marking posts, marking and measuring posts, marking tapes and marking and location tapes. The first types of devices – marking posts – have an informative function, signaling the presence of a gas network. They are placed on the surface of the ground; therefore, they must have a structure that is sufficiently resistant to all weather conditions. In turn, location devices control the condition and route of a gas network over a specific section. The standard color of the gas network marking system provided for by law is yellow.

Role and installation of marking tapes for gas networks

Marking and marking and location tapes are very important, if not the most important, elements of protecting gas pipelines. These tapes are laid underground during the installation of gas pipelines. They are located slightly above the gas pipeline to inform others, if necessary, that a gas network is in place. Marking and location devices have special steel inserts that allow the gas line to be identified. Readings from marking and location tapes are performed using locators. The installation of these tapes must be such that their ends are led out to the marking and measuring posts. The method of installation must ensure an adequate mechanical strength.
