Electromagnetic markers and 3M markers – what are they for?

The infrastructure of underground networks must be properly marked to ensure they are safe. Nowadays, in many places, especially in cities, different types of networks intersect with each other, which makes it difficult to locate the routes of specific networks. This solution includes the use of electromagnetic markers, including special 3M (programmable and passive) markers. The electromagnetic markers are usually placed underground and send an electromagnetic signal, thanks to which – using the right locator – you can easily track a given network. 3M markers and other markers come in many variants and are intended for locating telecommunication, power, gas, sewage and water supply networks.

Four basic types of electromagnetic markers

Depending on the specific demand, enterprises responsible for underground infrastructure installations can choose from four main types of electromagnetic markers. Sub-surface markers (such as 3M passive markers, e.g. EMS 1435) are set in holes drilled in concrete or asphalt. They come in two variants – as 3M programmable markers or 3M passive, i.e. non-programmable, markers. The programmability option allows to add short text information to the 3M marker memory.

Characteristic spherical markers are another variant of electromagnetic markers and 3M markers. The inner marker pin floats in liquid. These modern devices have versatile applications and enjoy the best reviews. Ball markers are used at depths of up to 1.5 meters underground.

Medium range markers, such as the 3M EMS 1255 passive marker, are placed deeper underground. The deepest placed markers are full-range markers. An example of this type would be the 3M Id EMS 1248-XR programmable marker.

3M markers – additional information

3M programmable markers or 3M passive markers are used to determine the routes of individual underground infrastructures in telecommunication, gas, power, and water supply and sewage networks. However, 3M electromagnetic markers are also used to mark key locations along a given underground network route. Such places include points of intersection of a network with another underground network, places where the network twists, turns or arches, as well as places where trays or cable boxes are located. Programmable and passive 3M markers can of course be used at other locations in the network as needed.

3M markers are known for their high-quality execution, which guarantees full reliability. In addition, they are very durable devices that will function properly for many decades.
